Akuerum

Yaghan Community from Bahía Mejillones Puerto Williams, Chile

Akuerum is a long-term project which documents the cultural identity and unforgiving terrains of Yaghan descendants. The Yaghans, the southernmost indigenous community in the world, have lived in Tierra del Fuego for more than 10,000 years.

The Yaghan language and some of their rituals are almost extinct due to a complex combination of colonialism, racism and gentrification.

Notwithstanding the Yaghans keep maintaining their cultural identity through generations. King crab fishing, basket weaving and tree bark masks that represent their spirits are an example of their current living culture.
